Comprehensive Pediatric Psychiatric Evaluations
A comprehensive evaluation is one done via a team approach. In such an evaluation, a psychiatrist, pediatrician, psychologist and therapist may all participate in a patient's evaluation. Each member of the team then contributes to the final report and each professional participates in making recommendations to the final treatment plan.
Adult Psychiatric Evaluations
Psychiatric evaluations are done by a psychiatrist who is an MD with specialized training in the evaluation and treatment of psychiatric illness. Psychiatric evaluations may result in the diagnosis of a specific psychiatric or emotional illness and sometimes the recommendation for treatment with talk therapy, medications or other therapeutic interventions.
Psychiatric Medications
Psychiatric medications are medicines prescribed by doctors who specialize in the treatment of patients with psychiatric illnesses. These doctors (psychiatrists) are MD's who have completed four years of medical school and full year of general internship prior to their psychiatry residency. They are first trained to be physicians and then move on to specialized training in psychiatric illnesses. Psychiatric medications are powerful and effective treatments for many illnesses but they should be prescribed only after careful evaluation and only by qualified professionals.
Psychological Assessment/Psychoeducational Testing
Psychoeducational testing is the process of testing a child for the presence of academic or learning disabilities or difficulties. Psychological testing may include testing for developmental problems, cognitive delays, normal development, personality testing or testing for psychiatric illnesses.
Individual Therapy
Individual therapy is the process of talk therapy in which the patient works individually with the therapist (either a psychiatrist, psychologist, marriage and family therapist or social worker) to process difficult feelings, learn about themselves or discover new ways to cope with challenging situations.
Family Therapy
Family therapy is the process of talk therapy in which the “patient” is really the relationships within the family or family group. The therapist works to improve communication among family members and perhaps to clarify and better define roles among family members.
Group Therapy
Group therapy is the process of talk therapy in which patients work together in groups with other patients and a therapist (either a psychiatrist, psychologist, marriage and family therapist or social worker) to process difficult feelings, learn about themselves or discover new ways to cope with challenging situations.
Couples Therapy
Couples therapy is the process of talk therapy in which couples work together with a therapist to improve their communication and work toward strengthening their relationships.
